What do the World Cup and Breaking Bread have in common?
We love GOOOAAAALLLSSS!
And so should you…whether you love soccer or not. I was sitting at the airport, working on my letter for this issue of Breadcrumbs, and was torn between two themes. Suddenly, there was a loud cheer across the terminal, and each TV screen flashed the word: GOAL. At Breaking Bread, we are big fans of goals, goal setting, tracking, and celebrating every step, or misstep, that helps you get closer to your goals.
I couldn’t think of a better theme for this issue of Breadcrumbs especially since today is July 1st and we are halfway through the year. What a great time to think about your goals and how to make the most of the second half of 2026!
Goals help us define success and clarify direction. Having written goals helps you make better decisions by answering, “Is this idea going to take me closer to my goals or distract me from them?”
Having clear goals also helps you relax and enjoy your holiday cookout without worrying about what you should or could be doing at work. If you’ve been wondering why you are so busy but not getting anything done, then it might be time to clarify or reevaluate your goals.
When people don’t have clearly articulated goals it also creates confusion, unproductivity and tension within teams, regardless of the size or type of organization. We question what, how and why because we don’t understand where we are going as a team.
On the other hand, isn’t it great when each member of the team is working towards the same goal! Having a common objective makes all the hard work, persistence and sacrifices worthwhile, on the field and in the workplace. When your team achieves their goal, the shared emotion is so much more powerful than if it were just your solitary accomplishment.
Whether you are an entrepreneur or work for an organization, clear goals can help you make the most of your time and resources. Our 6-week program participants have shared how valuable they find the goal setting activity and the cohort makes them feel like their community is cheering them on to success. Goals also come up in our July podcast episode.
I hope this morsel of Breadcrumbs inspires you to create or revisit goals and have a more meaningful month.
